Press Briefing

Spokesperson and Deputy Minister for Public Affairs Soosuk Lim

June 18, 2024  14:30  KST

Good afternoon. Let me start today’s briefing.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yul will visit New York from June 19 to 22 to take part in the Republic of Korea’s activities as the President of the United Nations Security Council.

On June 20, Foreign Minister Cho will chair the Security Council’s first in-person open debate on cybersecurity, a signature event of Korea as the Security Council President.

Amid growing implications of cybersecurity for international peace and security, the Korean government seeks to contribute to facilitating discussions in the Security Council on response to cybersecurity threats through this open debate.

Korea will also seek to raise UN member states’ awareness of North Korea’s violations of the UN sanctions and its threat to the international nuclear non-proliferation regime through malicious cyber activities.

On June 21, Foreign Minister Cho will also attend the meeting of the UN Peacebuilding Commission, which will be held under the theme of The Gambia’s peacebuilding experiences.

Foreign Minister Cho successfully supported The Gambia in 2017 as then Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission during his service as Korea’s Permanent Representative to the UN. Based on that experience, he will highlight the importance of peacebuilding as well as the cooperation between the Security Council and the Peacebuilding Commission.
