Li Young, Director-General of the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), to Visit the ROK

1. Li Young, Director-General of the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), who was elected as new UNIDO Director-General in June 2013, will make an official visit to the ROK on November 3-4 to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between the ROK and UNIDO. The upcoming visit to the ROK has been arranged as part of the newly-elected Director-General’s outreach to major UNIDO member countries.

2. During his visit to the ROK, Director-General Li Young will meet with the Second Vice Foreign Minister (acting Foreign Minister) and the President of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and visit reclaimed land in the Seoul metropolitan area and a power plant in the southwestern region.

3. In his meeting with the Second Vice Foreign Minister, Director-General Li Young will reaffirm the cooperative relations between the ROK and UNIDO. The two sides will also exchange views on the newly-elected Director-General’s vision and policy direction, ways to strengthen partnership based on the Foreign Ministry-UNIDO Strategic Cooperation Agreement (concluded in May 2012), and the 15th session of the UNIDO General Conference (to be held in Peru in December 2013).

4. UNIDO, a subsidiary organization of the UN, supports efforts of developing countries to achieve industrial development. The ROK has conducted cooperation projects with UNIDO mainly in the areas of vocational capacity building of the youth and environment-friendly energy.
