1. Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan had a telephone conversation with his Canadian counterpart
Lawrence Cannon on the morning of May 23 to exchange views on the sinking of the Cheonan and
the G20 Summit.
2. In the telephone conversation, Minister Yu extended gratitude for the Canadian government’s
expression of condolences over the death of soldiers in the sinking of the Cheonan; dispatch of
experts to take part in the investigation into the cause of the incident; and issuance of a strong
statement of condemnation against North Korea. He explained the Korean government’s future
measures and requested that Canada cooperate with the international community’s stern and
unified countermeasures against North Korea.
3. After expressing sympathy and consolation once again over the Cheonan incident, Minister Cannon
reaffirmed that Canada, as Korea’s traditional ally and partner, will support and cooperate on both inter-
Korean relations and the Korean government’s future countermeasures on the international stage such
as the UN.
4. The two Ministers exchanged views on the G20 Summit slated for late June in Canada and agreed to
work closely together for the success of the Summit and to turn the event into an opportunity for further
development of Korea-Canada ties.
