1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT) and the Korea Chamber of Commerce
and Industry (KCCI) will hold a “1:1 Conference for Consultations between Heads of Diplomatic
Missions and Corporate Representatives” at the Crystal Ballroom (2nd floor) of the Lotte Hotel
on February 10 on the sideline of the Meeting of Heads of Diplomatic Missions (February 8~12).
2. This is the second conference to be held, following the conference in 2008, and will be
attended by 105 heads of diplomatic missions and 249 corporate representatives. The
conference will be carried out in the form of 1:1 consultation, and about 649 consultations
are expected to take place.
※ This is 133 more consultations (25.8% increase) than the conference held in 2008,
which was participated by 191 corporations with a total of 516 consultations.
o Through the individual consultations, the heads of diplomatic missions will provide the
corporate representatives with the necessary information on entering foreign markets,
including the market situation and entry conditions, connect the Korean corporations
with foreign enterprises, introduce prospective foreign buyers and provide assistance in
solving business difficulties.
3. Of the participating 249 corporations, 159 (63.9%), or the majority are small- and medium-
sized enterprises, 81 are major corporations (32.5%) and 9 (3.6%) are institutions and
public enterprises.
o Corporations in the field of trade take up the majority (30.5%), followed by construction
(19.7%), IT & telecommunication (10.0%), general machinery (8.4%), food and
miscellaneous goods (6.8%), petrochemical (4.8%) and steel & metal (3.2%).
※ Major participating corporations: Kukdong E&C, Daesung Industry, Daewoo International,
Korean Air, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, Lotte Engineering and Construction,
Samsung C&T, Samsung Techwin, Samyang Group, Aju Group, Youngone Corporation,
Chong Kun Dang Pharmaceutical Corporation, Taeyoung Shipping, Pyunghwa Engineering
Consultations, Hyundai Heavy Industries, CJ Cheiljedang Corporation, LG CNS, SK E&C,
STX Construction, STX Energy, etc
4. The areas that corporations wish to discuss are supporting transactions and contracts
(144 cases, 45.1%), providing information (118 cases, 37.0%), explaining enterprises &
public relations (45 cases, 14.1%) and solving business difficulties (12 cases, 3.8%).
O The demand for consultations on supporting transactions and contracts has increased
compared to the 2008 conference in which providing information was most sought for.
This is due to Korean corporations turning more to diplomatic missions for support in their
transactions with foreign enterprises.
※ Order of areas most discussed in 2008: Providing information (329 cases, 64.8%), supporting
transactions and contracts (124 cases, 24.4%), explaining enterprises & public relations
(32 cases, 6.3%), solving business difficulties (23 cases, 4.5%)
5. According to one participant, the length of the conference is insufficient to reflect the
demands of the corporations. This describes the great interest corporations have in the
conference. Requests for consultations on emerging markets and countries with abundant
resources such as Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Brazil, UAE and Azerbaijan were high as well as
those for the traditional big power such as the US, China and Russia.
6. This conference is expected to allow Korean corporations to gain much from the experience
and knowledge of the diplomatic missions as well as their foreign networks.
7. In order to ensure that this conference brings specific outcomes, the MOFAT will give each
consultation a number and continue administering the progress of the consultations. Furthermore,
if the results of the consultations and the response of the corporations continue to be positive,
the MOFAT will continue to develop the conference and hold it annually on the sideline of the
Meeting of Heads of Diplomatic Missions.
