Emergency Relief Supplies for Avalanche Victims in Afghanistan

With regard to enormous loss of human lives caused by an avalanche near the Salang Pass
in northern Afghanistan on February 8, the Government of the Republic of Korea has decided
to provide emergency relief supplies worth 100,000 dollars to support recovery efforts.
As of February 11, the avalanche has left 166 people dead and 125 injured, and about 2,600
people have been rescued. The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan
is also supporting rescue operations.
The Salang Pass struck by the avalanche is a major transportation route which connects northern
Afghanistan to the capital Kabul. It lies at an altitude of 3,900 meters above sea level and is located
in the northern Parwan Province.
