Suspects Arrested in Murder of Korean Man in Guatemala

1. With regard to the murder of a Korean, Mr. Song, the police authorities of Guatemala’s Interior Ministry
officially announced on February 12 that they had arrested six people, four Guatemalans (including an
intelligence officer on active duty) and two Koreans, who have been suspected of involvement in the
murder case.
During a meeting with Director-General for Overseas Koreans and Consular Affairs Baik Joo-hyeon
who is visiting Guatemala on February 9-11, Guatemalan Interior Minister Velasquez notified that the
murder suspects had been arrested. Following the meeting, Guatemala’s police authorities made
an official announcement on the arrest.
2. Concerning the murder of Mr. Song, a government delegation led by Director-General for Overseas
Koreans and Consular Affairs Baik Joo-hyeon rushed to Guatemala and met with the Attorney General,
the Vice Foreign Minister, and the Police Chief on February 10. The delegation also met with the Interior
Minister on February 11, and strongly requested a speedy investigation into the murder case and
punishment for those involved, while having a detailed discussion on ways to strengthen the safety
of Korean nationals staying in Guatemala.
After the visit to Guatemala, the Director-General for Overseas Koreans and Consular Affairs will visit
Mexico on February 12 and preside over a meeting of consuls dealing with incidents and accidents in
Latin America.
