Minister Meets UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

1. Minister Song, who is currently in New York to attend the 62nd Session of the UN General Assembly, 
met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on September 25, and exchanged views on various issues 
of mutual interest such as the 2nd inter-Korean Summit, the Six-Party Talks, climate change and UN PKO 
activities.

2. Secretary-General Ban asked Minister Song to give his best regards to President Roh Moo-hyun, who 
will participate in the inter-Korean Summit slated for October 2-4, and hoped for the success of the 
upcoming inter-Korean Summit which would contribute to the peace and security on the Korean Peninsula.  
He also noted the growing support by the international community for the process of resolving the North 
Korean nuclear issue, and hoped to see great progress in denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula through 
efforts at the Six-Party Talks.

3. Minister Song explained that the upcoming inter-Korean Summit will provide a very important opportunity 
for accelerating the efforts to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue, and that the two sides plan to discuss 
peace on the Korean Peninsula and economic cooperation, among others.

4. Secretary-General Ban asked the ROK to actively participate in UN PKO activities so that it can play a 
role befitting its status in the international community.  Minister Song explained that the ROK dispatched 
350 troops to UNIFIL in Lebanon for the maintenance of peace in the region, and reassured that the ROK 
Government will continue to make efforts to this end by considering the enhancement of our contributions 
to UN peace-keeping activities as one of its policy priorities.

5. Minister Song conveyed his congratulations on the success of the UN Head of State/Government-Level 
Meeting on Climate Change on September 24, which was attended by high-level representatives from 
some 80 Member States under the leadership of Secretary-General Ban.  He also highly commended 
Secretary-General Ban's many achievements including development assistance for Africa, efforts to make 
progress in the Middle East peace process and the recent agreement on the UA-AU joint mission in the 
Darfur region of Sudan.
