1. From October 30 to 31, 2002, the 5th Meeting of the Korea-US Joint Committee on Scientific and
Technological Cooperation will be held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT) of the Republic of
Korea.
2. The Korean delegation will be led by Mr. Im Hong-jae, Director-General of the International Economic
Affairs Bureau of MOFAT and Mr. Koobon Jae, Director-General for Scientific and Technological Cooperation
Bureau of the Ministry of Science and Technology. It will also consist of representatives from the Ministry of
Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the Ministry of National Defense, government institutions and the academia.
The US side will be led by Mr. Anthony Rock, Principal Deputy-Assistant Secretary of the Department of State
and consist of officials from the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards and
Technology, the US Embassy in Korea and national research institutes.
3. This Joint Committee Meeting has been held twice a year since the Agreement Relating to Scientific and
Technological Cooperation Between Korea and US took effect in 1993.
4. This Meeting will provide an opportunity for both countries to improve mutual understanding on current
policies related to science and technology and discuss ways to expand cooperation in the future. Participants
will review the progress made in the Analytical Study of the Status of Science and Technology Cooperation
between Korea and the US, Cooperation in Nano-technology, and the Array for Real time Geostrophic
Oceanography (ARGO). The two sides will discuss the issue of establishing a network for research
cooperation on nano-technology. They will also discuss specific ways for cooperation in the development of
core technology in other areas.
